Yesterday I heard a story on NPR about the thousands of soldiers going AWOL from the Army. Close to 5,000 soldiers deserted last year, most of them newer soldiers, but some of them seasoned veterans like Sgt. Brad Gaskins, a veteran of Iraq (and Kosovo) who just decided to stay home during a two-week leave in 2006 after the Army refused get him treatment for Post Traumatic Stress.
At one point, the Army was celebrating the fact that they had met their recruiting goals for 2006 (or the fiscal year that includes 2006), which I found surprising at the time. How do these numbers fit with that fun fact? I’m not sure but will look more into it.
